On the classification of plane graphs representing structurally stable rational Newton flows

چکیده
We study certain plane graphs, called Newton graphs, representing a special class of dynamical systems which are closely related to Newton’s iteration method for finding zeros of (rational) functions defined on the complex plane. These Newton graphs are defined in terms of nonvanishing angles between edges at the same vertex. We derive necessary and sufftcient conditions-of purely combinatorial nature-for an arbitrary plane graph in order to be topologically equivalent with a Newton graph. Finally, we analyse the structure of Newton graphs and prove the existence of a polynomial algorithm to recognize such graphs. ‘(‘I 1991 Academic

The Newton Polygon of a Rational Plane Curve
The Newton polygon of the implicit equation of a rational plane curve is explicitly determined by the multiplicities of any of its parametrizations. We give an intersection-theoretical proof of this fact based on a refinement of the KušnirenkoBernštein theorem. We apply this result to the determination of the Newton polygon of a curve parameterized by generic Laurent polynomials or by generic r...
متن کاملThe Universal Templates of Ghrist
R. F. Williams Abstract. This is a report on recent work of Robert Ghrist [G], [GHS], in which he shows that universal templates exist. Put another way, there are many structurally stable flows in the 3-sphere, each of which has periodic orbits representing every knot type. This answers a question raised originally by Mo Hirsch, and popularized by the contrary conjecture, by Joan Birman and the...
متن کاملWord representation of streamline topologies for structurally stable vortex flows in multiply connected domains
Let us consider incompressible and inviscid flows in two-dimensional domains with multiple obstacles. The instantaneous velocity field becomes aHamiltonian vector field defined from the stream function, and it is topologically characterized by the streamline pattern that corresponds to the contour plot of the stream function. The present paper provides us with a procedure to construct structura...
متن کاملSparse Parametrization of Plane Curves
We present a new method for the rational parametrization of plane algebraic curves. The algorithm exploits the shape of the Newton polygon of the defining implicit equation and is based on methods of toric geometry.
متن کاملHopf bifurcations to quasi-periodic solutions for the two-dimensional plane Poiseuille flow
This paper studies various Hopf bifurcations in the two-dimensional plane Poiseuille problem. For several values of the wavenumber α, we obtain the branch of periodic flows which are born at the Hopf bifurcation of the laminar flow. It is known that, taking α ≈ 1, the branch of periodic solutions has several Hopf bifurcations to quasi-periodic orbits. For the first bifurcation, previous calcula...
